The 59th Annual Scientific Conference of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Lagos State Branch, concluded on July 5th, 2024, after a week of insightful discussions and presentations. Held at NECA House in Ikeja, Lagos, the conference brought together medical professionals to focus on advancements and challenges in prostate health and related disorders.
The event kicked off on Sunday, June 30th, with a Thanksgiving Service at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), where attendees gathered to express gratitude and seek blessings for the conference ahead.
On Monday, July 1st, Dr. Ekun Oloruntoba set an educational tone with a presentation on prostate disorders during the TVC News Breakfast show. His overview provided a foundation for the detailed discussions that followed throughout the week.
Tuesday’s sessions included a keynote address by Dr. Rufus W. Ojewola, who emphasised the crucial role of laboratory evaluations in diagnosing and managing prostatic diseases. He discussed the importance of various tests and highlighted the challenges of misdiagnosis, underdiagnosis, and overtreatment, calling for improved regulatory oversight.
In addition to the keynote, Dr. Ekun Oloruntoba presented on “Decoding Prostatitis” and “Advancements in Testicular Failure Diagnosis & Treatment,” providing insights into causes, diagnosis, and treatment options for these conditions.
Despite heavy rain on Wednesday, participants eagerly gathered at NECA House. MLS Wojuade Kehinde Samuel delivered a compelling presentation on the mechanisms underlying prostate-induced obstructive azoospermia, emphasizing the importance of prostate health in male fertility. Dr. Olaifa Serah addressed the psycho-social impacts of testicular failure and prostate disorders, underscoring the significant mental health and relationship challenges these conditions pose.
Thursday’s lectures shed light on prostate cancer, its risk factors, and revolutionary laboratory techniques. The day also featured distinguished service awards, a raffle draw, and the unveiling of the AMLSN Lagos House project, with participants lauding the efforts of the Branch Executive and Conference Planning Committee.
The conference concluded on Friday, July 5th, with a Jumaat Service at the Alausa Secretariat Central Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja, bringing a reflective and communal end to the event.
Key messages from the conference emphasized the importance of early screening and proactive management of prostate health. Participants were urged to know their risk scores and seek medical advice promptly if they notice any symptoms related to prostate disorders.
The conference underscored the ongoing commitment of medical laboratory scientists to improving prostate health through advanced diagnostics and collaborative care.
