Young Medical Lab. Scientists have been told to brace up for the digital revolution in the Medical Laboratory Science Profession.
The Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Lagos, Prof Oluyemi Akinloye made the call while delivering a keynote address on the topic: “Digital revolution, artificial intelligence, and Cyber Security: The untapped opportunities for the Medical Laboratory Scientists” at the just concluded Young Medical Laboratory Scientists Forum 3rd Annual Public Health lecture held at the Conference hall, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research Yaba Lagos State.
Professor Akinloye noted that long gone are the days that the diagnostic and therapeutic value of laboratory testing was not appreciated, and many physicians viewed clinical laboratories simply as an expensive luxury that consumed both valuable space and time.
According to him, medical laboratories have evolved from empirical to experimental, from evidence-based to personalized medicine, and have proven that the clinical lab is the true source of medical authority.
Prof. Akinloye charged Medical Lab. Scientists to brace up by building capacity in areas like Molecular Diagnosis, Nanotechnology and Biosensor, Forensic and Fingerprinting, Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics, Pharmacogenomics, Lipiomics, computer sciences, computational biology, bioinformatics, diseases modeling and algorithms, etc. to meet up with the digitalization of health care in medicine in general and laboratory medicine in particular in the 21st century.
The two-day event chaired by the Past President Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) Dr. Toyosi Raheem was well attended by Young Medical Laboratory Scientists across the country as well as dignitaries from different walks of life.
Several goodwill messages were delivered by the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (MLSCN), Association of Female Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria among others.
The event, held virtually and physically, saw the conferment of awards on some deserving individuals for their contribution to the Medical Laboratory Science profession in particular as well as healthcare in general.
Dignitaries present in the opening ceremony were the AMLSN Former President Dr. T. Y Raheem, AMLSN Vice President South West zone Mr. Femi Adebo, AMLSN Chairman Ikeja Chapter Mrs. Habibat Audu, AMLSN National Publicity Secretary Olusoji Billyrose etc.
